Step One: Narrowing Down Your Wardrobe
Decide whether or not if you will be using current pieces that you currently own, mix old and new, or completely start anew. If you will be keeping any of the items that you are currently own, check out my recent post of organizing your closet to help you decide which of your existing pieces you should keep. Since I am creating a brand new wardrobe I first started out with making a decision on my color scheme. I’m into neutral tones for the moment so I used inspiration from the color chart below (shout out to @teamxiri on instagram for this image).
I selected 45 pieces in the following order:
- 10 pairs of shoes
- 10 bottoms
- 18 tops
- 5 dresses
- 2 jackets
I chose 45 pieces, as it was easy for me to pair items based on the color pods that I selected (black, gray, nude, and olive).
Now you don’t have to select 45 pieces, that number that is ideal to you and your budget. A good range of items you’d want to have can be anywhere from at minimum 25 pieces to a generous 50 pieces.
Step Two: Putting Your New Wardrobe To Work
Now with capsule wardrobe it’s ideal to wear these items seasonally. I broke down my seasons as such:
Winter: December, January, February
Spring: March, April, May
Summer: June, July, August
Fall: September, October, November
I’ve been researching this topic for a couple of months now and from what I’ve found handbags and accessories were not included. I decided not to include them as that’s where I tend to have the most fun with pulling my outfits together.
Now the main reason I was interested in this idea was because along with being a closet hoarder, I shop a lot! With that being said… you are not to shop within the three-month season.
Step Three: Preparing For The Next Season
It will be hard to stay out of the malls… TRUST ME! However, you can start shopping for your next season within the last two weeks of your current season. You can stay within the selected amount as stated above or you can add more or less. Since I live in a place that has only two seasons (hot and cold), I will more than likely switch up the number of pieces I purchase from season to season.
